CHAPTER SEVEN

“Playing cards?” Aliana asked, her voice rising. “Of all the things you could have asked for, you want cards?”

Nario and Faine were laughing uproariously but he forced himself into a more serious mode at her question. “In one of the past generations the cards were introduced for the Badari for no reason known to us today,” he explained. “The Khagrish had a habit of making modifications in each generation that later went nowhere or were abandoned on the customer’s whim. You’ll never find a Badari without a deck of our cards though. It’s a private joke for my people,” he finished a bit lamely, exchanging glances with Faine. “I’m also testing our so-called host and how far he’ll go to keep us content as his prisoners, no matter he calls us his guests.”

“It will pass the time,” Tad the insurance salesman said, having already wandered over to test the vidscreen and discovered it was disabled.

“You can waste your time playing cards if you want but I’ve got things to do.” Prue pulled the handheld from her pocket and waved it in the air. “I’m also going to take first pick of the beds in our dorm room and I don’t want to hear any arguments.” She glared at them. “You do all snore. Well, okay maybe Faine doesn’t.” Turning on her heel, she walked away into the second bedroom, shutting the door with a slam.

Aliana stepped past Nario. “I want to see where I’m supposed to sleep as well. Prue and I could share this room maybe—”

Hastily he followed her into the other bedroom and shut the door behind them. When she stared at him with her eyes wide and a startled expression on her face, he explained himself. “I’m sorry but I think it’s safer to keep up the illusion we’re mates. One, I don’t want the Khagrish to start questioning anything they think they know about us and two, my estimation is the story has brought you some extra protection which I want to maintain.”

Aliana studied him and sat on the edge of the none too large bed. “So we are fake dating. And now we have only one bed.”

“I can sleep on the floor,” he said. “And please understand it isn’t in the Badari nature to lie to anyone except the Khagrish. The enemy doesn’t deserve the truth about anything.”

She nodded. “All right. I accept the stipulation. But I can’t allow you to sleep on the hard floor. We can share.”

“I’ll be in and out of the room,” he said. “Faine and I will split the watch tonight.”

Rising, she walked to stand in front of the mirror on the wall and combed her fingers through her hair. “Do you think it’ll be safe to use the shower? Although I don’t have any clean clothes to change into.”

“I’ll be relieved when I have an idea what this group wants us to do for them,” he said. “Then I can plan our next move. But I’ll stand guard while you take a shower.
